El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro Trail Association (CARTA)
CARTA is an international, non-profit, membership organization that supports, promotes, and fosters educational opportunities and community-rooted trail and neighborhood enhancements along El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.
Description:
El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro is the earliest Euro-American trade route, tying Spain's colonial capital at Mexico City, to its northern frontier capital at what is now Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our non-profit trail association currently consists of more than 130 members interested in the pre-history and history of the trail and the communities that still thrive along it. Our members include archaeologists, historians, civic leaders, artists, government personnel, international agencies, heritage tourists, and other individuals connected by a passion for learning about our shared past. We are increasingly engaged in on-the-ground Trail-related projects that enrich the lives of those living along the Trail and those beyond its immediate realm.
History:
El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail was federally designated in 2000. CARTA was established three years later to help foster awareness and preservation of the Trail.
