El Paso Villa Maria
Villa Maria is a home where women who are poor and homeless can transition from crisis to self sufficiency while living within a beautiful, safe, supportive and spiritual community.
Description:
Villa Maria serves as a transitional living center for women who are homeless and without children in their care. In an effort to immediately restore her sense of security, each woman admitted receives her own private bedroom/bath combination, nourishing meals and basic necessities to meet her unique womanly needs. Case management services facilitate each woman’s development and implementation of a plan of action to move from crisis to self-sufficiency which might include educational advancement, job training, job search, medical care, housing, domestic violence and/or substance abuse counseling and securing of financial benefits.
History:
El Paso Villa Maria opened its doors to welcome homeless women without children into the spiritual and supportive community in February 2007. Within the first month or two, women occupied all 22 private rooms, each working with her caseworker to become self-sufficient. As of May of 2008, Villa Maria had met the needs of more than 85 homeless women. Many of the women served by Villa Maria have been victims of domestic violence, have completed substance abuse rehabilitation programs, have been released from the hospital with no where to go, or have been homeless for other reasons. Preparation to serve the women of El Paso began in 2003 when the El Paso Villa Maria, Inc., a 501(c)3 (non-profit) entity, became incorporated.
