New Mexico Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program advocates for the civil and human rights of residents living in long-term care facilities.

Description:
Ombudsmen provide a voice for residents of Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities at a time in their lives when they are particularly vulnerable. Ombudsmen assist these residents by advocating for their rights, investigating complaints and helping to resolve their concerns fairly, and ensuring they receive the care they deserve. Volunteers are certified by the State of New Mexico and free training is provided.

History:
Established through the Older Americans Act of 1965, The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program is both federally and state-mandated to provide oversight and advocacy services to residents in long-term care. The Ombudsman Program is a division of The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department, which is dedicated to promoting the independence and dignity of elders and individuals living with a disability.
