How: Daily care that includes a loving, safe and nurturing environment that meets each child's physical and emotional developmental level and needs. Provide on-site healthcare, therapy, screening, positive discipline and interaction as integral parts of the program.
- Provide families the support they need to be the "best parents they can be" regardless of issues and problems they face and help initiate and/or foster family system change.
How:
a. Internal:
-Create and maintain a Parents-as-Partners
approach to child care service delivery.
-Implement and facilitate parenting support
groups, classroom mentoring experiences,
education, healthcare and health plans(both
physical and emotional), a parent advisory
team, and other activities that reinforce
positive parenting behavior and ownership
of Jardin.
b. Provide assistance to families (approximately
8-10 who have no other resource) in
developing and implementing an action plan
towards self sufficiency.
c. External:
Refer families to existing services and
programs by developing and monitoring a
coordinated approach with agencies that offer
these services.
History:
Jardin De Los Ninos began as an idea to help homeless families in Las Cruces. In 1995, Sr. Anna Waldschmitt and Sr. Beth Daddio, two energetic Nuns, met with homeless providers in the area and found that childcare for homeless families was the single greatest obstacle to achieving stability and escaping the cycle of poverty.
The motto "give a child a chance to grow" became the focus of "our garden of children", or Jardin De Los Ninos. The agency began in the educational wing of Peace Lutheran Church. In September, 2001 we moved to our new location, where we are a part of the Community of Hope Complex. This location is where other homeless services are provided (most for adults).
