First Step Center

First Step Center, in partnership with the medical community of the greater Dona Ana County area is dedicated to providing caring, affordable, quality pediatric and women's health care to residents of Southern New Mexico

Description:
First Step Center cares about those who are disenfranchised from the health care system and works to ensure that access to care becomes more equitable. Because resources are limited, it is First Step's responsibility to be effective, efficient and economical in how we work. First step is driven to become better at all the things we do and look for new ways to meet the needs of the people we serve and with whom we work. Because First Step's work requires the strengthening of diverse communities; we rely on healthy partnerships with others to accomplish our mission.

History:
First Step Center was begun in 1987 at Memorial Medical Center in response to an ongoing crisis in New Mexico regarding access to prenatal care. At that time, 48% of the women who presented to the emergency room in labor had no prenatal care. FSC was started with one physician, Sister Myrtle Keller, who arrived in the community with more than 17 years of missionary experience in Africa. Dr. Keller identified health care for women in this area as "third world care".
Two years later, First Step added their pediatric component. Since then, First Step has continued to fulfill the mission to provide healthcare for women and children in our community.
