Description:
Concilio Campesino del Sudoeste, Inc. (Concilio, CDS, Inc.) is a 501(c)3 private community-based not-for-profit organization that has been in existence since 1972 in southern New Mexico. Concilio CDS, Inc. has a service history in addressing needs in senior issues, health issues, social justice, and social services. Concilio CDS, Inc. serves southern New Mexico in Dona Ana County and its surrounding communities. The communities being served by Concilio CDS, Inc. include: Hatch, Garfield, Salem, Las Cruces, San Miguel, La Mesa, Mesquite, Vado, Berino, Chamberino, La Union, Santa Teresa, Anthony, Chaparral, and Sunland Park. The service area is federally designated as a Medically Underserved Area. The population that we serve includes: seniors, youth, migrant/seasonal farm workers & their families, immigrants, and a large percent of people who are monolingual Spanish or bilingual. There are various components under Concilio’s umbrella of services. ▪ The senior volunteer component focuses on providing volunteer opportunities for seniors over 60 years, their family members and community at large, particularly those with limited incomes - Foster Grandparent (FGP) and Senior Companion (SCP) programs. FGP serve in schools, senior centers, Head Start Programs, and youth centers. FGP offer emotional support to children and youth to grow, gain self-esteem and confidence. SCP assist their clients – other seniors with daily living tasks and provide companionship. These programs enable low-income seniors to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self- esteem through continued participation in needed community services. Concilio CDS, Inc. Health Promotion component is part of all the initiatives throughout the organization. Health promotion services consist of on-going community education for cancer prevention & resources, tobacco prevention & cessation, exercise & fitness, and civic engagement for health prevention. ▪ For the past year, Concilio CDS, Inc. has been initiating another component of Time Banking to meet the basic needs of elderly in Dona Ana County in New Mexico. At its most basic level, Time Banks allow individuals or groups to earn Time Dollars/Credits by helping others. Participants can then spend Time Dollars/Credits to obtain assistance when they need help themselves. Time Banking recognizes that everyone has something to give, and that everyone’s time is valuable, and it builds resiliency by fostering social support networks. Also Concilio CDS, Inc. provides youth and adult employment opportunities as a volunteer site for the AmeriCorps VISTA and Summer Associate VISTA program, a program through the Corporation of National Community Service. Concilio CDS, Inc. is also the sponsor agency for AmeriCorps VISTA program in southern New Mexico.
