Description:
The Ability Center for Independent Living promotes a growing sense of personal dignity and responsible community participation of persons with disabilities through training, community development and direct services such as life skills training, information and referral, peer counseling/mentoring, Independent Living skills development, and individual and systems advocacy. The Ability Center for Independent Living seeks to meet the unserved needs of persons with disabilities living in the Counties of Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, and Sierra, New Mexico.
History:
The Ability Center for Independent Living is a private non profit New Mexico corporation serving people with disabilities, from birth to death. In 1987 New Vistas Independent Living Center, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, expanded its services to southern New Mexico, creating a satellite, which spun-off into a free standing Center for Independent Living a year later. Initially called Southern New Mexico Center for Independent Living it later changed to Disability Resource Center before being renamed The Ability Center for Independent Living (TACIL).
