Spay & Neuter Action Program (SNAP)
Logo

Our mission is to prevent unwanted letters of puppies and kittens by subsidizing spay and neuter surgeries for the pets of low-income individuals and families.

Our vision is to dramatically reduce the number of shelter intakes and subsequent euthanasia of healthy adoptable dogs and cats in Dona Ana County.

Description:
SNAP assists pet owners who receive any type of public assistance, are full-time college or university students, or are homeless. We also assist people whose income is at or below that required for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) eligibility, presently 185% of the federal poverty level. We collect a small co-pay for each surgery (homeless clients are not asked to make a co-pay), currently $15 for cats and $25 for dogs. We then provide a voucher to the client for the pet's surgery at one of our six area veterinarians. The clients make their own appointments for their pets. We pay the remaining surgery costs directly to the veterinary clinics.

History:
SNAP was founded in 1998 and received its 501c3 status under the name "Pet Overpopulation Defense." In March 2002 we changed our name to Spay & Neuter Awareness, and in February 2005 we adopted our present name to better reflect our mission.

In 2001, we subsidized 68 surgeries. In 2006, we broke through the milestone of 1000 and subsidized 1003 surgeries. Although this sounds impressive, we as a community need to reach the goal of 4,000 spay and neuter surgeries per year for the pets of our low-income residents before the number of animals euthanized at our local Animal Shelter begins to decrease significantly.
