Tierra Del Sol Housing Corporation
Tierra del Sol is a regional housing and community development organization whose purpose is to build affordable housing and through its housing construction activities to promote the development of the community. Tierra del Sol seeks to identify and explore all avenues and resources; bring together persons in positions of leadership and influence who share its aims and desires; to create affordable housing opportunities and the attendant community development in the culturally diverse communities of New Mexico and West Texas.
Description:
Tierra del Sol Housing Corporation is a private, non-profit community based organization, incorporated in April 1973 and 1980 in New Mexico and in Texas, respectively. Tierra del Sol is also authorized to do business in the State of Arizona and is recognized regionally and nationally. The Internal Revenue Service classifies the corporation as 501(c 3 exempt from federal income tax. Volunteers, an interfaith reverend, a county commissioner, a group of farm workers and rural families organized Tierra del Sol. The accomplishments to date include 4,500 completed units of affordable housing and related infrastructure of water, sewer and community facilities. The beneficiaries are persons that earn low income. The housing assistance is provided through technical assistance, community education and training, direct local development and construction.
History:
Tierra del Sol Housing is a mature nonprofit housing and community development organization led by an 11-member volunteer board of directors for 32 years. This community based organization is designated Section 501c3 by the Internal Revenue Service tax exempt code. It operated by 17 staff with extensive experience in producing over 5,000 units of affordable housing and supportive services. Tierra del Sol has extensive need for staff and professional support to assure completion of its annual production goal of 250 to 450 housing units. Its product lines include homebuyer pre-purchase counseling, subdivision and site development, single family home ownership, multifamily rental housing, property/asset management, resident supportive services, home rehabilitation or reconstruction, community facilities and neighborhood revitalization. Its service area is rural distressed colonias and urban low-income neighborhoods in southern New Mexico and west Texas. Its annual operating budget averages $1 million, and the annual investment in leveraged resources for project developments is from private and public sectors in the form of forgivable or direct loans, grants and equity investments of about $25 million. Its values and mission is "to improve the living conditions of persons that earn low-to-moderate income and revitalize rural colonias and distressed urban neighborhoods in New Mexico and west Texas by providing affordable housing, community infrastructure and economic development."
