| Last updated on November 19, 2009 |
This rewarding volunteer position offers an opportunity to serve one of New Mexico's most vulnerable and underserved populations, who need a voice. Volunteers are friendly visitors, advocates, mediators and educators. They help long-term care residents resolve complaints and ensure that their rights are honored. In just three hours a week, they make a world of difference in the lives of residents. Program staff provide ongoing support, free training and educational conferences on the latest topics in the long-term care field. Hours are flexible, and individuals set their own schedules. Ombudsmen come from all walks of life. Volunteers are required to participate in a Three-day certification training, pass an in-state background check and provide 3 hours a week of service, which includes any travel time or documentation. Preferred characteristics include: • Good communication, listening, and problem-solving skills. • Ability to advocate in a professional and diplomatic manner. • Sensitivity to the elderly and disabled. • Fair, open-minded and non-judgmental. • Willingness to keep accurate documentation. • Respect for confidentiality. Volunteers may not be assigned to visit a facility where they have a potential conflict of interest (financial or personal).
