Tierra del Sol has been a leader in New Mexico for developing homes through the mutual self help method. Families save up to $13,000 or more for each home cost by being organized into work groups contributing volunteer labor that is known as "Sweat equity" to build each others homes. Homebuyers who cannot perform the volunteer labor may also obtain new or used homes that are constructed by local area subcontracted professional builders. Existing homeowners are also assisted to obtain grants and loans to repair renovate or replace existing homes that are substandard or unsafe. |
