Adult Basic Education Program
General Information
Agency: Dona Ana Community College-Adult Basic Education
Program name: Adult Basic Education Program
Description : The ABE program and its services are for adult learners (16 years of age and older) who have not completed a twelfth-grade (12th) education, are not currently enrolled in high school, and have educational skills below this level. Since people learn differently, students may choose to attend classes, participate in small-group instruction, receive personal tutoring, or study on an individual basis at any of our four learning centers.
Hours of Operation: Summer hours: Monday - Friday/8am - 5pm. Regular semester hours: Monday - Thursday/8am - 7pm: Friday/8am - 5pm. Closed for certain holidays.
Eligibility Requirements: ABE services are provided according to a student's ability to benefit and show learning progress. Should a student's ability to make learning progress come into question, the matter will be addressed at the proper professional and administrative level and referrals may be made.
Intake Procedure: There is no cost for ABE classes, services, or textbooks. Pre-registration and pre-testing begins one month before the start of each semester. Pre-registration, which guarantees a seat, is strongly encouraged. If necessary, students may also register after classes begin but some classes might be closed by then. Classes begin each August, January, and May. Students needing the GED or ESL program are given an indicator exam for placement into their appropriate level of instruction.
Insurance Information: none
Languages Spoken: English, Spanish
Fees: All classes, services and preparation for the GED are free of charge. The official GED test is given at NMSU's Garcia Annex. The cost is $10.00 per test.
