Dads 101
General Information
Agency: New Mexico Young Fathers Program
Program name: Dads 101
Description : The New Mexico Young Fathers Program, constantly looking for better ways to provide services, has initiated a Dads 101 course on designated Saturdays. The idea for the course comes from the need to provide critical fatherhood information to young dads that are not able to attend weekly group sessions due to school studies, work schedules and other activities. The course provides the basics of fatherhood such as diapering, dressing, bathing a baby, and in addition provides critical information on prevention of child abuse; domestic violence, STD’s and preventing repeat pregnancies. Paternity, Team Parenting and information on local resources are presented in one day. Dads completing the course will receive a certificate for attending the five-hour course. In the spirit of our commitment to provide continuing support to young dads they will immediately qualify for our case management services and will be able to tap into our resources for as long as they need. Life skills, mentoring, information on relationships, and information on fathers’ rights and legal options are all resources that the Young Father Project can provide on a continuing or as need basis.
The course is also recommended for dads 26 and under who may need to fulfill a court-mandated obligation. Sandwiches/cold cuts are provided for the first session through a donation from Dr. Juan Lucero, O.D. of Accutech Eye Care in Las Cruces. Bibs, pacifiers, and Baby Talk Magazine are all part of the goodies dads receive to help enhance their fatherhood experience.
