Here are ways you can make a difference in the life of an elderly person:
-Be an ECHO caller. Volunteers are matched with a frail senior who they call during weekday mornings to make sure the senior is safe and well. Often, these matches bloom into wonderful friendships.
-Be a Friendly Visitor. Volunteers are matched with a senior whom they visit with on a regular basis to provide friendship and cheer.
-Provide transport and shopping help. Volunteers are matched with a senior who needs someone to take them to the supermarket and help them while grocery shopping. Volunteers also take seniors to medical appointments.
-Provide help with minor household maintenance. Volunteers are needed on an on-call basis to help frail seniors with minor household maintenance, such as changing a light bulb or doing a minor repair.
People who wish to volunteer must fill out an application, agree to have a background check performed, and have an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers are given orientation and training on working with elderly.
Patience and good listening skills are very helpful.
