Volunteers assist the Director of Advocacy in tracking bills and providing legislative testimony to committees within the legislature. Volunteers testify regarding legislation that is supported by AARP's goals and vision. Volunteers also meet and get to know our State Legislators. Volunteers are provided with training, talking points and support during the legislative session. Volunteers also assist with AARP events throughout the year as well. Commitment is two years and volunteers are most active during the legislative session from January to March (normally). Volunteers must be able to remain nonpartisan in their representation of AARP during the legislative session. They must be able to drive to and from the statehouse and remain if needed for committee testimony. Volunteers must have commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP, demonstrate ability to lobby effectively, act as a resource on state issues, ability to communicate with legislators and lobbyists representing wide and diverse thoughts, and be available on a short notice during the legislative session.
