Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on November 18, 2009 |
Thousands of volunteer groups each year assist the Foodbank in re-packing food. Typically, they are part of a civic, educational, or faith-based group. While volunteers range in age from 10 to 65 and above, many are of school-age. In fact, The Idaho Foodbank is often the first place a youngster volunteers. There are a number of different tasks that warehouse volunteers may be asked to perform, all of which assist the Foodbank in relieving hunger. The current need normally dictates the type of warehouse activity, which is selected by our operations manager. Food sorting includes categorization, weighing and palleting food-drive donations of shelf-stable items. Frequently volunteers are asked to repackage donated bulk items into individual family-size containers for ease of distribution -- anything from frozen broccoli to powdered sugar. All necessary equipment is provided. Occasionally volunteers are needed to help break down large donations of fresh produce and dairy items from our Grocery Alliance program. Volunteers may be also asked to assist in cleaning areas of the warehouse. HOURS: Volunteers are accepted during the following times, in increments of 1/2 hour to the full shift. Arrangements can be made for individuals to work a full day. ALL VOLUNTEERING IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY to avoid overcrowding our limited work area. Tuesday/Thursday: 11:30 am - 4 pm, 6:30-8:30 pm Wednesday/Friday: 8 - 11:30 am, 1:30-4:30 pm Saturday 9 am - noon Warehouse volunteers make it possible for the Foodbank to complete its fundamental task: getting 6 million pounds of food a year ready to distribute to hungry people in Idaho.
Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, or group leader. Generally volunteers should be age 12 and up. No one under 8 is admitted to the warehouse without special clearance from the Volunteer Program Coordinator or Assistant, which must be obtained in advance, and then only when accompanied by a parent. All volunteers must wear CLOSED-TOED SHOES while working in the warehouse. This opportunity is sponsored by: The Idaho Foodbank
