Between April and November each year, over 100 volunteers help out at three Community Gardens for refugees. Refugee gardeners plant and tend to vegetables which they use in their meals. The gardens provide fresh, nutritious produce for refugee gardeners. In addition, the refugees have a place for healthy outdoor activity and a comfortable way to learn English.
The Idaho Office of Refugees needs volunteers to help out at the community gardens. Volunteer tasks include:
- help find cash donations, tools, soil, straw, seeds and plants
- develop new gardens in the Boise area
- help older adults with weeding
- provide education to refugee gardeners
- improve the infrastructure of the gardens (build shade shelters and tool sheds)
