Wayne Food Initiative
Our MISSION:
Wayne Food Initiative is a caring community who seek to build a sound food system that strengthens the health of our people, protects our natural world, and increases local business opportunities for the entirety of Wayne County and surrounding areas.
Our VISION:
A healthy, knowledgeable, and engaged community that through collaborative efforts and active leadership makes nutritious and affordable food accessible to all, protects the natural world through sound environmental practices, and supports a strong and growing local farming and business economy.
History:
Aided by a planning grant to the Center for Environmental Farming Systems from The Office of Extension and Engagement at North Carolina State University, diverse institutions and organizations, government and private, for-profit and nonprofit, began meeting in the fall of 2007 to develop a Wayne County sustainable, local foods initiative. In the Fall of 2008, with the aid of Heifer International, Wayne Food Initiative began organizational development! We now have community gardens located throughout Goldsboro and an Emerging Leaders Youth Program to inspire the leaders of tomorrow to become more active and vocal in their food system.
