Agency Details:
RSVP Of Wayne County, NC
RSVP (The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is an invitation to individuals over 55 years of age to make a difference in their community. We provide service opportunities by matching an individual’s skills, life experiences, and interests to address identified community needs, while offering a high quality experience that will enrich the volunteer’s life.
Description:
The key to RSVP’s appeal is flexibility. Volunteers decide how much time they have to give and build a plan of service around their interests and experience. Volunteers can use skills they have learned in their careers or choose to learn something new. A retired tax accountant, for example, can volunteer in his or her field of expertise or decide to help build houses for the underprivileged. In addition to matching volunteers to community agencies in Wayne County, RSVP maintains a database of volunteers to contact as specific needs arise, such as a food drive or in the event of a disaster. RSVP is an integral part of Wayne County’s disaster plan. What kind of volunteer opportunities are there? What kind of skills do I need? Volunteer job descriptions vary with the agency served, both long term on a regular basis and short term, such as in the event of a disaster or special fundraiser. Some examples include: mentoring, clerical, telephone reassurance for the homebound, working with seniors or handicapped, rebuilding homes, and language translation. • Necessary skills vary from simply being able to make a caring phone call once a week to skills as technical as required for building a home. • Time commitments vary depending on the position, long term or short term.
History:
RSVP is a national volunteer program funded by the Corporation for National Service through Senior Corps since 1971 and has been alive and well in Wayne County since 1973. RSVP has been located on the campus of Wayne Community College since 2002. Over the years RSVP has performed the key role of bringing urgent issues to the forefront, convening community agencies and mobilizing resources to find solutions. Networking with the Wayne County Association of Volunteer Administrators (which provides education and leadership towards effective volunteer management), enables RSVP to keep abreast of long and short term needs in the community.
