Our mission is to preserve, operate, maintain and develop the Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace; to provide the general public and schoolchildren an understanding of the life and educational impact of Gov. Charles B. Aycock; and to emphasize 19th century life on the farmstead and in the classroom.

Description:
We are a state historic site and are operated by the NC Department of Cultural Resources. The site has a Visitor Center with an orientation film, sales desk, museum and restrooms. We also have a furnished one room schoolhouse, an 1870's farmhouse, kitchen and various outbuildings. We offer guided tours and living history demonstrations for the public and different types of groups.

History:
A local effort to save the birthplace began in 1949. It became part of NC Historic Sites ten years later.
In the beginning the site consisted of the house and kitchen. Oak Plains School was moved to the site in the early 1960's. The Visitor Center was expanded to its present size in 1994. Today the site receives over 16,000 visitors a year and many of them are school children.
