How to help Hurricane Katrina Survivors - The best way - send money through American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, or other organizations that specialize in getting surviors needs met as soon as possible. If interested in volunteering, volunteer locally and affiliate yourself with an organization like the local American Red Cross or any of the National VOAD agencies (http://www.nvoad.org/membersdb.php?members=State). Another way to help is through Wayne County's Make Difference Week. Partners United Way, the County of Wayne and the City of Goldsboro, and Volunteer Wayne/RSVP have expanded the national day of comunity service here in Wayne County this year to one week, to create Make a Difference Week. Supply drives for agencies serving the disaster areas and local needs will be conducted, along with hands on projects in local non-profits. The entire community including businesses, schools, civic clubs, churches, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will join together during Oct 15-22. The Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Marion Edwards Recovery Center Initiative, and Communities in Schools will benefit from the supply drives. Last year during Make a Difference Day, 4,060 flood buckets were collected for survivors of Hurricane Charley which devastated the mountains of North Carolina. At $45 each, the value of just the flood buckets was $182,700, not to mention $2,000 worth of school supplies, $3,000 worth of canned goods, just to name a few of the successes. We anticipate an even larger response this year due to the disaster. The community has been touched by the recent tragedy and is looking for ways to connect in a positive way that will impact survivors directly. Take a look at Make a Difference Week under "Agencies" to find out how you can help. |
