American Clock & Watch Museum

The American Clock & Watch Museum is a non-profit educational research institution established to promote a general public interest in and appreciation of handmade and production clocks and watches produced in the United States.

Description:
The American clock & watch industry, which flourished in the Bristol and Plymouth areas in the early 19th century, contributed to the development of Bristol as a major industrial city. The museum is designed to preserve and interpret the history of the clock industry to local residents, school children and tourists. This is accomplished by maintaining the museum, operating a library of primary and secondary historic documents, supporting a publication program, studying and interpreting the history of American horology through educational programs, and encouraging the preservation of information, objects, architecture and historic sites related to American horology. The museum is open daily for casual drop-in visitors from April through November. Formal group tours are available throughout the year by reservation.

History:
The museum was founded in 1952 and opened to the public in 1954. Located on historic Federal Hill, it is partially housed in the 1801 Miles Lewis house. Through the years the museum and its collection have grown to over 4,000 items and 10,000 sq. ft. Another expansion is in the planning stage.
