

Volunteer Opportunity Details:
A Disaster Action Team (DAT) is a team of trained Red Cross volunteers sent to the scene of a disaster within our Chapter area to provide immediate relief to victims and emergency workers. DAT volunteers ease the difficulties of people unexpectedly overwhelmed by disasters such a fires, floods, ice storms and hurricanes, or by many types of accidents including chemical, nuclear, highway, railroad, aircraft or building collapses. You might be called on to be the first to arrive at a disaster scene, assess disaster damage, staff and emergency shelter, serve food, interview disaster victims, counsel and comfort disaster victims, provide first aid, handle inquiries from relatives, drive vehicles, operate communications, take inventory and keep records, work long hours. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be willing to make commitment to position, in good health and willing to work hard. Must be able to attend required training classes as well as special training sessions in the latest disaster techniques and procedures, regular meetings and drills. Must pass background check. Local Disaster Action Team volunteers (DAT) MUST BE AVAILABLE TO BE "ON CALL" evenings and/or daytime and weekends - schedule to be determined.
