Agency Details:
Community Housing Resource Board (CHRB)
The mission of the CHRB remains true to its origins: To educate the community about housing discrimination and, thereby, eradicate illegal housing discrimination in the Billings area. The CHRB envisions an open and welcoming community for all persons who choose to live here.
Description:
The CHRB is governed by a 20-member board of directors made up of housing industry groups, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions. CHRB is staffed by one part-time contract employee and a student intern. The CHRB conducts educational programs for nonprofits and civic organizations as well as for student groups through SD#2, MSU-B, Tumbleweed, and the Montana Foster Care Association. In addition, the CHRB offers condinuing education programs for REALTORS, landlords, property managers, and other housing industry groups on the Federal Fair Act and related laws and regulations. The CHRB also staffs the city-wide fair housing hotline, answering over 900 calls per year.
History:
The CHRB was formed in 1992 in response to the Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI)conducted by the City of Billings in 1991. The AI encouraged the City to help create an organization that would bring together the housing industry, nonprofit groups, and local government in order to provide education about fair housing issues to the community as a whole. Over the past 17 years, the CHRB has been the one consistent voice for fair housing in the Billings area. At the current time, the CHRB is the only nonprofit in Montana solely dedicated to the eradication of illegal housing discrimination.
