The Council on Aging assists seniors to remain independent in their homes as long as it is safe for them to do so.

Description:
The Council on Aging’s programs and services focus primarily on seniors who are “at-risk” of losing their independence due to age, poverty, chronic illness, isolation and/or malnourishment. Last year, the Council on Aging served over 7,500 seniors who were in need of such services as a nutritious meal, companionship, transportation and assistance with accessing Medicare and other programs. The Council on Aging serves the most fragile and vulnerable of the County’s senior population.

The Council on Aging also offers opportunities for seniors who are committed to being involved in their community.

History:
The Council on Aging, a private non-profit organization, was established by County Resolution in 1975. A 7-member council was appointed by the County Commissioners to serve as a coordinating body for senior programs within Yellowstone County. Currently, the Council on Aging is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors appointed by the County Commissioners.

Since that time, the organization has expanded in the areas of nutrition, transportation, information and assistance, volunteering, social activities and housing.

In November 1996 and 2006, County residents approved a one-mil levy for senior services helping to ensure a secure level of funding for the future.
