Through the Council on Aging, homebound seniors can receive Meals on Wheels (MOW) in Billings, Laurel and Worden Monday through Friday. The Billings MOW Program is always in need of volunteer drivers.

MOW helps many seniors like Gloria who would otherwise be forced to relocate stay in their homes. Gloria lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. She has learned to ably navigate her apartment using her cane with skill. But cooking is another story. “Meals on Wheels is a lifesaver” says the 83 year-old retired teacher. “I feel safe. I know that I have something nutritious to eat “. Meals on Wheels is more than merely food delivery for the homebound Gloria. “I don’t have anyone to talk to most days”. But I know that a Meals on Wheels driver will be stopping by. They are so nice. We talk a little and they make me feel cared for. They do everything they can to keep me in my home. Where would I be without them?”

Volunteer drivers meet at the First Presybertian Church (13th and Ploy) around 10:15 a.m. on the day they drive, pick up the food and then drive their route, which typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. On the day they drive, volunteer drivers receive a meal ticket for a noon meal at one of the Billings four meal sites.

Volunteers may drive as often as they wish or volunteer as a substitute. Volunteer may submit a request for mileage reimbursement, which is paid at the federal rate.

A Meals on Wheels driver must have a safe driving record, a safe and reliable vehicle and vehicle insurance coverage as required by the State of Montana. Individuals who wish to become a volunteer MOW driver would receive driver orientation and would accompany a driver for a period of time to become acquainted with the program.
