The YWCA Domestic and Sexual Violence programs count on volunteer advocates to respond to the emergency room to advocate for and provide support to people undergoing Sexual Assault Nursing Exams, where forensic evidence is collected. This is an on-call opportunity, with volunteers determining how often, how long and when they are on call. Interested Volunteer advocates are also needed to help in the shelter, answering crisis line calls and assisting with children's group while shelter residents attend support group. Support and compassion offered to victims of violence in their time of need is essential for victims' recovery and rewarding for volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Angie at 245-4472 to discuss any questions and get additional information.
Volunteers must be 18 year or older. There will be training about the issues of domestic and sexual violence and what an advocate might encounter working with victims. Volunteers will need to sign a release for a criminal background check. Individuals must possess good communication skills and be non-judgmental toward victims of domestic or sexual violence. All persons encouraged to apply. Volunteers often remark what a valuable opportunity this is to give back to the community while experiencing personal growth.
