January is National Mentoring Month
There are various forms of mentoring--one-on-one mentoring, one-to-a group mentoring, team mentoring (several mentors to a group) school-based mentoring, workplace mentoring, faith-based mentoring. Whether you have a little time to give or a lot, there may be a program out there that works for you.
On the volunteer homepage of youcanvolunteer.org search with the keyword "mentor". You should find some opportunities.
Here are some questions you will want to ask when contacting a mentoring agency
What type of mentoring program(s) do you offer?
What are the ages of the children?
Where does the mentoring take place?
How much time am I expected to spend?
How long is the time commitment?
What kind of training do you provide? How long and what does it cover?
What kind of support system do you provide?
How will I be matched?
What kind of application, placement procedure and screening do you have for mentors and mentees?
Will I intereact with the mentee's family?
Remember:
Activities vary by program and all programs are not the same.
Time commitment varies by program.
Mentoring is rewarding.
You can make a difference.
Mentoring is not for everyone.
You have options.
It may take time to be matched.
Before seeking an oppportunity:
