YMCA Of The East Bay
The YMCA of the East Bay is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to building the spirit, mind and body of individuals and families throughout Alameda and West Contra Costa Counties. With current strategic program focus areas in literacy and health and wellness, the YMCA serves people of all ages, religions, races and abilities.
Description:
The Association Resource Center provides leadership and guidance through consistent and timely administrative, fiscal, and programmatic support to the branches and camps of the YMCA of the East Bay including human resources, philanthropy advancement, payroll, and accounting. Through solid training and high quality standards and partnership between the Association Resource Center and its branches and camps, the YMCA of the East Bay helps build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
The YMCA of the East Bay has a special emphasis on youth, with a continuum of services from infant childcare (three months) through school aged child care, youth sports, apprentice programs, teen prevention programs, and camping.
The YMCA of the East Bay is a catalyst for community change and development, starting with individuals and families and engagement in neighborhoods and with cultural, spiritual, and civic institutions. The YMCA of the East Bay serves over 26,000 members in inner-city and suburban communities of Oakland, Hayward, Fremont, Newark, Pleasanton, Dublin, Alameda, San Leandro, Richmond, and camps in other regions of Northern California.
History:
The YMCA of the East Bay was started in 1879 as the Young Men’s Christian Association of Oakland. In a few short years the Oakland YMCA membership grew, with new branches opening in East Oakland, now known as the Eastlake YMCA, and on Telegraph Avenue, the original YMCA in Oakland, with housing for men. These facilities offered housing, sports, recreation, language instruction and character development for thousands of young men. In West Contra Costa County, community members organized the Richmond Coronado Community YMCA in 1918.
During the next half century the Oakland YMCA expanded with branches in Northwest Oakland, Hayward, Fremont, and the Tri-Valley area to become the YMCA of Alameda County. The Richmond YMCA extended its program activities to Pinole, Rodeo, Hercules and San Pablo to become the West Contra Costa YMCA. In 1990, the YMCAs of Alameda County and West Contra Costa County merged to form the YMCA of the East Bay.
