About GOALS for Women

GOALS for Women is seeking a volunteer to help us plan and build the capacity of our nonprofit agency in Berkeley. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Development Volunteer with a commitment to furthering GOALS’ mission and vision.

Located near the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, G.O.A.L.S. (Greater Options and Assistance for Lifelong Success) for Women is a community-based, grassroots 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide no- and very-low income African American women with culturally sensitive and appropriate, evidence-based, client-centered mental health and socio-economic empowerment services and advocacy. Currently, G.O.A.L.S. serves 60 women and their families (90 children and youth) per year.

Benefits of this Volunteer Opportunity

The Development Volunteer position is a great opportunity for either:

 a retired individual who would like to connect with the community and support the empowerment of low and no-income African American women, or
 an independent, self-starter who wishes to take initiative and gain hands-on experience in a grassroots agency’s development.

In addition, the volunteer will have many opportunities to learn about the unique culture of our Clubhouse and Counseling Center. In our visible location, community members frequently walk-in to our offices to inquire about our services. Counseling and advocacy services are provided upstairs, and downstairs women have access to computers for conducting job-searches, a play area for children, a kitchen, a place to journal or watch empowerment videos, and a meeting area.

Qualities we Seek

We are seeking an individual with the following qualities:

 Experience with research and networking
 Enjoys building relationships with potential funders through in-person meetings, newsletters or other methods that are comfortable and enriching for the volunteer
 Grant writing or proposal writing experience
 Excellent grammar skills
 Detail-oriented and highly organized
 Independent and self-motivated
 Likes to take initiative
 Ability to commit to 8-12 hours per week onsite and from home

Development Volunteer Activities

Onsite in Berkeley and from home, the following activities are planned for the 8-12 hour a week schedule:

 Orient yourself by meeting GOALS staff, interns, and program participants. Gain a thorough understanding of our organization’s culture, mission, goals and programs. Review GOALS’ Web site, brochures and other marketing materials, and past grant materials.
 Using a list of prospects previously developed, research and update the list based on current deadlines of grantmaking organizations. Highlight funders that provide core operating or capacity building support.
 Create a plan of action and a grants calendar.
 In consultation with GOALS’ Executive Director, write grant applications in alignment with grantmaker guidelines. When possible, collaborate with the Executive Director to contact grantmaking organizations by phone or in-person to discuss the fit of GOALS’ programs to the funder’s guidelines and goals.
 After submitting the application, contact the funder when possible to maintain a relationship and ensure that they can call you if they have questions.
 Once grant funds are received, manage the contract by identifying report due dates and ensure that staff are collecting all data needed to report to the funder. Ensure progress report deadlines are met.
 Assist with other marketing activities that help GOALS for Women build relationships with the community and funders including a monthly electronic newsletter and periodic print newsletter.
 Assist the Executive Director with brainstorming ideas for building GOALS for Women into a thriving, self-sufficient agency.
