Nonviolent Peaceforce
Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a nonpartisan unarmed peacekeeping force composed of trained civilians from around the world. In partnership with local groups, Nonviolent Peaceforce members apply proven nonviolent strategies to protect human rights, deter violence, and help create space for local groups to pursue their goals nonviolently, enter into dialogue, and seek peaceful resolution.
Description:
A number of NP staff and volunteers are located in the SF Bay Area, and they work on local, national, and international aspects of NP’s program. The administration of training for NP’s international field teams—currently working in Sri Lanka and the Philippines—is done here. NP’s program for the North America region also originates here, in the Bay Area, including organizing and administering several nonviolent conflict intervention training programs throughout the US and Canada, as well as informational advocacy work for unarmed civilian peacekeeping. Locally, a NP chapter of volunteers offers 1-day, basic nonviolent conflict intervention training, speaks, raises funds, and staffs informational tables for NP.
History:
Nonviolent Peaceforce was founded by 90 Member Organizations from six continents in December, 2002 in India. Since then, it has placed multi-national, paid, highly trained field teams in Sri Lanka, Guatemala and the Philippines, as well as advocating internationally for unarmed civilian peacekeeping on a large scale. It also works to grow its work through regional networks of Member and Supporting Organizations throughout the world.
