First Place for Youth
It is the mission of First Place to support youth in their transition from foster care to successful adulthood by promoting choices and strengthening individual and community resources. First Place works to ensure that all foster youth have the opportunity to experience a safe supported transition from foster care. Through a supportive housing program, an academic enrichment program, counseling, youth community center, and collaboration with other Bay Area organizations, we help youth to obtain the skills to live independently and succeed on their own.
Description:
First Place targets its services to 16 to 24 year-olds who are preparing to age out of foster care or who have recently aged out of care. Once a youth ages-out of care at the age of 18, county-funded foster care services are discontinued for the vast majority of these youth. Moreover, there are limited community-based services available. Instead of receiving support and guidance during this critical transition, foster youth are without housing, a source of income, adult encouragement, or community support.
History:
First Place for Youth is a Bay Area nonprofit organization founded in 1998 to end homelessness and poverty among former foster youth.
