Oakland Based Urban Gardens (OBUGS)
The mission of OBUGS is to build healthy communities through programs offered to children, youth, and families in a network of school and neighborhood gardens, green spaces, and farmer's markets.
Description:
We are a west Oakland based nonprofit that provides in-school and after school programs to students at three local elementary schools, including St. Patrick/Prescott, St. Martin de Porres, and Lafayette School. We do gardening, arts and crafts, and cooking activities with students at these schools. We also have a summer school program at the same sites. High schoolers can also intern with us through the YOBUGS program, which runs a weekly farmstand. Finally, on the first Saturday of each month we have a community gardening day at one of our garden sites. Please contact us for more information!
History:
OBUGS was founded over ten years ago by Oakland businesswomen Margaret Majua and Dorothy Noyon. The founders saw a lack of nonprofit and government programs for low-income families in this neighborhood and a lack of access to fresh, healthy food. In the spring of 1998, they organized a team of Lafayette school students, teachers and a boy scout troop to participate in the revitalization of the neglected community garden attached to the school. Since then, OBUGS has blossomed into the four-site organization it is today.
