Oakland Elizabeth House

Elizabeth House is a transitional residence for women with children who have experienced homelessness, violence, addiction or poverty. Our mission is to support these women and their children in their transition to independence. We are dedicated to creating, nurturing and maintaining a cooperative living environment of hospitality and respect in the Catholic Worker tradition.

Description:
Elizabeth House, in addition to providing affordable transitional housing, provides nutritional food and supportive services to the women and their children. We offer resources for case management services for the women that include counseling services, housing advocacy, employment services,and training in life skills. We also have a parenting group that meets monthly and weekly homework, reading, and writing clubs that address the educational and social needs of the children.

History:
Elizabeth House opened in 1991 as a result of one woman's response to the needs of those homeless women and children she met on the streets of Oakland and Berkeley. She wanted to offer the kind of support that would allow these women to gain back control over their lives and transition them to independent living. The founding values of hospitality, hope, empowerment, personalism, community, compassion and nonviolence are to this day integral components of Elizabeth House.
