The mission of Family Bridges is to empower the most vulnerable members of the Asian community, especially the elderly, the newcomers and those with limited English language skills, by providing them with the assistance necessary for them to lead self-sufficient, independent lives.

Description:
Family Bridges, Inc. is a non-profit organization designed to serve low income seniors, newcomers and those with limited English language skills residing in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. With a focus on the Asian community, Family Bridges includes five major programs that are designed to promote independence through information and learning. These include a Social Services Unit, two Adult Day Health Care Centers, a drop-in Senior Center and a Diabetes Education Center. It is our goal to prevent many of the disadvantaged individuals in our community from becoming unemployed, institutionalized or isolated because of language or cultural barriers.

History:
In the late 1960s, changes in the United States’ immigration laws and horrific political conditions in China encouraged a new wave of immigration to the United States from China. Many of these immigrants arrived in Oakland without the basic survival skills that they needed in order to find housing, work, and health care. To assist these immigrants, a group of volunteers founded the Oakland Chinese Community Council, Inc. (later to be known as Family Bridges, Inc.) in 1967 as a volunteer-operated, Chinese-language information and referral service. Our new name, Family Bridges, Inc. reflects how we have embraced the diversification of our services, to encompass building bridges for all families and all races beyond the Chinese community.
