A Safe Place exists to provide battered women and their children transitional and supportive services to enable them to break the cycle of violence and regain a sense of self-esteem and personal power and to create community change in behaviors and beliefs which will help end domestic violence.
Description:
A Safe Place provides the following services: 24 Hour Crisis Line, Emergency Shelter, Children's Program, Community Counseling, Support Groups, Community Education and Outreach, Teen Violence Prevention Program, and 40-Hour Domestic Violence volunteer education.
History:
A Safe Place has been in existence for over 30 years and was founded due to the urgent need of shelter for domestic violence victims in the East Bay. It begin with volunteers that offered crisis counseling, referrals, and information services. In 1980 the agency received an anonymous donation which allowed it to purchase its own shelter to house 20 women and children. A Safe Place continues to expand its program services to meet the needs of battered women and their children.
