Agency Details:
AIDS Walk SF
AIDS Walk San Francisco is California's largest AIDS fund raising event. On July 19, 2009 over 25,000 people of all ages and backgrounds will come together as a demonstration of unity that seeks an end to the suffering caused by HIV/AIDS. Proceeds benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and numerous HIV/AIDS organizations throughout the Bay Area. As a volunteer, you are a critical component to a successful AIDS Walk San Francisco 2009. From now until July 19th, the AIDS Walk office needs volunteer assistance with projects that range from assembling walker kits and mailings to volunteer recruitment for the day of the event. This is a great opportunity for an individual to join a group of fun volunteers in a relaxed atmosphere or for a whole group to come and support this extraordinary event. The AIDS Walk office is open on Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Please call the Volunteer Coordinator, Rachel Odessky at (415) 615-9255 or email at rachelo@aidswalk.net to get started!
Description:
San Francisco AIDS Foundation - www.SFAF.org . Established in 1982, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation develops innovative solutions, combining evidence-based strategies with community experience to fight HIV/AIDS and promote holistic good health. With the unrestricted funds raised by AIDS Walk San Francisco, the Foundation is able to provide direct services to thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS and focus intensive prevention programs to those most at risk of contracting the disease.
History:
In 1987, the first AIDS Walk San Francisco was an extraordinary and much-needed success that also helped shatter the silence. More than 6,000 compassionate Bay Area residents raised an astounding $667,000. At a time when the nation was inattentive to the looming crisis, these courageous walkers brought their message visibly to the streets: We are here to fight AIDS! The money raised at that event, and the annual AIDS Walks that have followed, has enabled the AIDS Foundation to continue its critical work and provide services to more than 100,000 men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS and their families. (A portion of the AIDS Walk proceeds also go to many other important AIDS organizations within the Bay Area.)
