Parents For A Safer Environment

Our mission is to foster the healthy development of children and help protect wildlife and the environment by decreasing preventable exposure to toxicants. Our focus in the past 7 years has been primarily to reform the use of pesticides by public agencies and promote safer alternatives by passing policies and helping in implementation.

Description:
We are a grass roots organization based in central contra costa county, Moraga, CA. We are made up of the Director, a steering committee of parents from central Contra Costa County, and an advisory board of experts from around Northern California in the areas of Integrated Pest Management, Toxicology, Medicine, and Oncology Research.

The director writes grant proposals and works pro-bono at this time with some funding going to pay experienced interns, staff, consultants, and grant projects.

Most of our work at this time involves overseeing Contra Costa County Departments pesticide misuse and overuse, but working with some school districts to help them also adopt least toxic pest management policies.

In addition, we are submitting some grant proposals get more funding to possibly support staff in 2010-2013.

History:
Formed in 2002 by local Lamorinda parents to initially help educate schools, particularly preschool directors and staff to help reduce unnecessary exposure of environmental toxicants to the vulnerable, growing youngsters.

By 2009, Parents for a Safer Environment has passed numerous policies in the Town of Moraga, the Moraga School District, consulting St Mary's College and the Acalanes School District on Integrated Pest Management, led the creation of a full time staff person to oversee pesticide usage by Contra Costa County Departments, negotiated the cessation of scheduled pesticide spraying and all pyrethroids in all Contra Costa County buildings by a contractor, won many grant awards one which involves field studies using safer alternatives to using herbicides near creeks and flood control channels of Contra Costa County.

Numerous other successes... we are very busy and need talented and committed community members to join us!
