Agency Details:

REI Brentwood

Taking care of the environment is a natural extension of REI's love for the outdoors. As a business, we're committed to reducing the negative impact our co-op has on the planet. Our stewardship work involves employees and members, and extends in to the larger community.

Description:
REI is committed to making a difference, today and tomorrow, locally and globally. In 2007, REI donated $3.5 million to conservation and outdoor recreation nonprofits and causes at the local and national levels. Our grants program seeks to engage communities - especially youth - in outdoor activity and stewardship. REI employees are active in caring for public lands and open spaces. We also invite our members and customers to join us in volunteer service projects organized by nonprofits and our stores. Last year, nearly 33,000 volunteers teamed with REI employees to restore trails, clean parks and streams and plant trees.
Here at REI Brentwood, since our April 2009 opening, we have partnered with Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed, Delta Science Center and Save Mount Diablo on multiple creek and trail service projects. And are looking forward to working with the Bay Area Ridge Council on a trail project this coming November.

History:
REI was founded in 1938, when 23 Seattle mountaineers led by Lloyd Anderson started the co-op. Their goal was to have easier access to good quality climbing gear at a fair price. This goal is and has been on-going.
The first store outside of Seattle was in Berkeley,CA in 1975. The Seattle Flagship store opened September 1996. Since then REI has seen consistent growth and expansion with 7-8 new store openings in 2007, including Cranston, RI; West Hartford, CT; Clackamas, OR; Fresno, CA; Marina, CA; Issaquah, WA; and Schaumburg, IL. Another 9 stores opened in 2008, including Stockton, CA; Ann Arbor, MI; Kennesaw, GA; Santa Fe, NM; Charlotte, NC; Round Rock, TX; Lincoln Park, IL; Asheville, NC; Boca Park, NV., with Brentwood, Ca: Westminster, CO; Richmond, VA; East Hanover, NJ all opening in 2009.
REI is committed to ensuring an open and welcoming environment for employees, customers and members. Its goal is to serve a broad spectrum of people who enjoy the outdoors and active lifestyles. REI has been recognized the past 12 years as one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work for in America."
REI focuses on educational outreach programs and grants that provide opportunities for outdoor fun and mentorship in order to encourage more children to enjoy the outdoors and respect natural lands. Together with our partner, Leave No Trace, we facilitate a year-round program called Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids (PEAK).
