Lamorinda Spirit Van

The Lamorinda Senior Transportation Program is an alliance of Transportation organizations, whose mission is to provide accessible transportation for Lamorinda seniors who no longer drive, so that they can continue to live in their own homes independently and meet their medical/dental appointment, shopping, and social needs.

Description:
The Lamorinda Spirit Van Program is one component of Lamorinda Senior Transportation, An Alliance of Transportation Providers. This program provides para-transit van rides to Lafayette, Orinda, and Moraga seniors. We take them to lunch at the C.C. Cafe Nutrition Program, to medical/dental/physical therapy appointments, grocery and sundry shopping, to the bank and post office, to concerts and workshops at Lafayette Senior Center, and on occasional outings to parks and museums, Broadway Plaza and Sun Valley Malls.

History:
Community meetings were held to establish the need for senior transportation. Collaborative meetings were held with our partners: Senior Helpline Services Rides for Seniors, Orinda Seniors Around Town, and Contra Costa Yellow Cab and DeSoto Company. Funding was secured from the City of Lafayette for two years and from East Bay Community Foundation for one year. A Program Coordinator and part-time driver were hired in May, 2006, and our first ride was delivered on June 19, 2006 to the C.C. Cafe. Procedures were developed. Volunteer drivers were recruited and trained. Rides to Errands were begun late in 2006 and expanded in 2007. Rides to medical appointments began in 2008. We continue to recruit volunteer drivers and write grant applications to secure continued funding. Passenger rides have increased each year. The program is considered a success.
