Contra Costa Senior Legal Services (SLS) provides free legal services to Contra Costa County seniors who are age 60 or older.

Description:
SLS provides general legal advice, counsel and representation in civil matters, such as housing, income maintenance/finance, elder abuse, consumer matters, estate planning and related issues. In addition to the services provided by SLS staff at the Richmond office we have a consult-an-attorney project and a wills clinic program and those programs are offered at senior centers throughout Contra Costa County. On March 3, 2009 we began the Senior Self-Help Clinic at the Peter L. Spinetta Family Law Center in Martinez. The clinic is available Tuesday mornings to seniors representing themselves in court. SLS also presents workshops and legal educational events throughout Contra Costa County to senior groups, service providers, caregiver groups and other interested clubs and organizations. There is no fee for our services.

History:
SLS is a private, non-profit agency that has been providing services to seniors since 1976. The program began as the Paralegal Senior Project and later, when incorporated as a stand alone agency in 1986, the name was changed to Legal Assistance for the Elderly. In 1995 the name was change to Contra Costa Senior Legal Services. Since the inception of the program in 1976 more than 25,000 seniors have been served by the program. These services has enabled many seniors to stay in their homes, to become eligible and retain public benefits, to recover real and personal property lost due to financial abuse, and obtain Temporary Restraining Orders that have offered relief from physical, financial and emotional abuse and in some cases may have even saved lives.
