United Nations Association East Bay

Our mission is to educate the public about the United Nations and its specialized programs, and to encourage greater support and participation of our government in the United Nations.

Description:
The local East Bay chapter has members in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our Chapter sponsors a United Nations Association Information and UNICEF Center, located in Berkeley, which is run by volunteers for the five days of the week it is open. The Center has a small research library, sells UNICEF cards and gifts, as well as mostly fair trade international gifts, flags and banners, UN items, etc. The Center along with the Chapter's Education committee sponsors Trick-or-Treat collection and UNICEF education in area schools.
The chapter has a board of directors who plan UN-related events and activities. UN Day on October 24th is one of its main celebrations.

History:
The East Bay Chapter was formed in 1982, merging three chapters located in Oakland, Berkeley, and Walnut Creek, which formed in the 1960s. The UNA Information & UNICEF Center was founded on August 1, 1964 and has had several locations of operation. The national organization began as a result of public desire to support the United Nations, with Eleanor Roosevelt being a prime mover. Currently there are 175 UNA chapters in the United States.510-849-1752.

United Nations Association East Bay 5 Overall Experience    Experience rating
Inspiring and educational
I first came to the Center as an intern for a campus organization. The passion of those who devoted their time not only to the Center, but also to the cause, inspired me to learn more about UNA-USA and UNICEF and return as a volunteer. The staff provides a warm, familial environment in which everyone's participation is vital to the sustenance of the Center.
