The Watershed Project

The mission of the Watershed Project is to educate and inspire communities to protect their local watersheds. We seek to increase public understanding of the effects of human impacts upon San Francisco Bay Estuary, to promote and encourage understanding and appreciation of our local natural resources, and to foster an awareness of the need for responsible stewardship of these resources.

Description:
The Watershed Project is a non-profit education organization that develops and implements teacher and public education workshops, sustainable gardening classes, and community outreach and watershed stewardship programs. We engage students and the general public in hands-on projects that protect the San Francisco Bay Area environment, and educate communities about local watershed issues and resources.

History:
The Watershed Project was founded in 1997, under its original name of Aquatic Outreach Institute (AOI). We develop and implement programs about water resources within the San Francisco Bay Area. We offer workshops for educators (Kids in Creeks, Kids in Gardens) and the general public (Gardening For Wildlife), and foster the development of community groups that advocate for and take action in the stewardship of local natural resources. AOI has received numerous awards, including the EPA Environmental Leadership Award in 2002. Through the generous support of city, county, state and federal, as well as foundation grant programs, we have served thousands of teachers, youth and community members within nine Bay Area counties, and developed strong collaborations between local schools, resource agencies, local government, and the larger community.
