California Shakespeare Theater
Logo

The California Shakespeare Theater is committed to being a leading community citizen by nourishing the imaginations of audiences, artists and learners of all ages, through our artistic endeavors and educational initiatives. We are dedicated to producing boldly imagined and deeply entertaining interpretations of the plays by William Shakespeare and fresh discoveries of important works of world theater, and to creating new work inspired by classic literature. Through our Artistic Learning Initiative, we are dedicated to making meaningful learning opportunities accessible to a diverse constituency of learners throughout the Bay Area. Our vision is to be a cultural leader, serving the greater Bay Area.

Description:
The California Shakespeare Theater currently produces four plays each year, with a total of over 100 performances between May and October. Since Jonathan Moscone joined Cal Shakes in 2000, the Theater has broadened its programming to include other important writers of world theater, such as Anton Chekhov, Thornton Wilder, and Tom Stoppard.

History:
The California Shakespeare Theater, an award-winning theater company founded in 1974, has evolved from an artistic collective performing outdoors at Berkeley's John Hinkel Park, into a fully professional theater enjoying broad community support and guided by strong artistic leadership. A full production history can be found on our web site, www.calshakes.org. In 1991, following a $3 million capital campaign, the California Shakespeare Theater moved to its permanent home, the Bruns Memorial Amphitheater, in the East Bay hills between Berkeley and Orinda. 'The Bruns' seats 545 patrons, many of whom enjoy pre-performance picnics on the beautiful grounds.
