SPAWNERS is a grassroots, volunteer organization whose mission is: to protect the San Pablo Creek Watershed and inspire community appreciation and stewardship through advocacy, education, and habitat restoration.

Description:
Over the next year, SPAWNERS will continue to coordinate volunteer monitoring programs, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) survey events, BMI surveys and standard water quality monitoring. We will continue to lead creek side re-vegetation projects, maintain and publicize the native plant demonstration gardens, hold creek clean ups throughout the watershed, develop an educational component for our creek bank restoration site and continue our year-old sub-watershed project investigating potential sources of non-point source pollution or habitat deterioration along Castro Creek a tributary of San Pablo Creek. As our library restoration project nears completion, we will be exploring new potential restoration sites and developing a project plan for the next restoration.

History:
SPAWNERS began on Earth Day 2000 when over ninety volunteers came together to remove invasive ivy, blackberry, and garbage from the grounds of the El Sobrante Library bordering San Pablo Creek. This effort evolved into native plant demonstration gardens and a massive streamside re-vegetation project at the El Sobrante Library, both of which have attracted hundreds of volunteers each year. Additional programs and projects were undertaken as interest and participation increased and our geographic scope now covers the entire watershed from San Pablo Dam to the Bay.
