Teen Challenge NorWestCal Nevada
Mission: Teen Challenge provides successful recovery for men, women, teens, children and families with life-controlling, destructive and abusive lifestyles such as, alcoholism, drug abuse, homelessness, and gang involvement through training, education, mentorship and spiritual direction.
Description:
Teen Challenge is a one-year residential program in which drug addicts, alcoholics, gang members, victims of abuse, dysfunctional families, or any other life-controlling problem can meet the Lord and learn to follow Him. The overall objective is to initiate a total environment approach and change of values in the lives of the students in the program. Teen Challenge endeavors to help the whole person become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive. EMOTIONALLY: The rebuilding of abused minds and emotions is the key importance for the restructuring of broken-down thought patterns, creating new, more stable ways of life.
PHYSICALLY: Teen Challenge cares for physical needs on a long-term basis. Shelter, food, clothing and recreation.
SOCIALLY: Students are encouraged to work out relationship problems to successfully relate to family and peers once they complete the program through the benefit of a group living situation.
EDUCATIONALLY: Teen Challenge provides for those who have not completed their high school education. The educational program helps the students earn their GED. Additionally, Teen Challenge has a curriculum specifically designed to teach students more about God and who they are according to God. It is designed to cover approximately one year at the program.
Teen Challenge provides treatment for drug users through rehabilitation and offers academic programs focusing on character, integrity, spiritual growth and work ethics. Teen Challenge also provides reintegration into society, employment and Christian fellowship.
History:
Teen Challenge was started in 1958 by David Wilkerson, who went to New York City to help drug addicts and gang members. He started a home called "Teen Challenge" to help these people to grow stronger in their relationship with God. Teen Challenge has since expanded to more than 170 centers throughout the United States and over 250 centers World-Wide. Teen Challenge was started in 1961 in San Francisco and was legally incorporated in Northern California in 1964. Street rallies and evangelism were conducted in San Francisco during the early years. Teen Challenge ministries sprang up throughout the Northern California area over the next several years. Teen Challenge was started in Sacramento in 1965, Oakland in 1967, San Jose in 1971, and Nevada in 1998. Teen Challenge operates one of only two Women and Children's Centers in the country; also, in San Jose is the only Family Center in the US; and in EastBay we have the Oakland Men's Center. Our most recent Teen Challenge, ministering to adolescents, opened in the Spring of 1999 in Reno, Nevada. We now have a Women's Center in Eureka, California and a Men's Center in Arcata, California. Many thousands of lives have been touched by the ministry of Teen Challenge. We continue as the highest success rate program for Drugs and Alcohol in the world at 86% Success Rate.
