Lincoln Child Center
Lincoln Child Center enables vulnerable and emotionally troubled children and their families to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Founded as the only racially integrated orphanage in Oakland, Lincoln has long maintained cultural competence as a primary principle of service provision.
Description:
Residential Treatment Program -provides residential care for up to 26 seriously emotionally disturbed children ages 6 though 14, whose behavior requires continuous monitoring and therapeutic treatment live at Lincoln for an average of 14 to 18 months before they return to the community and less intensive care. Typically, 80% are wards of the court. About the same percentage have been physically or sexually abused. Only 20% perform at or above grade level with most one to two -- and even three -- years behind academically. Day Treatment - Between 35 and 50 elementary and middle school students who live in the community but whose emotional difficulties make them too disruptive for public school join Lincoln's residential clients in the small classes of Lincoln's accredited non-public elementary and middle school. Time is devoted to building students' social and conflict resolution skills. Both groups and, whenever possible, their families, receive individual and group counseling. School-Based Services- Vulnerable and at-risk children receive mental health services at selected elementary and middle schools in Oakland, Pittsburg and Bay Point. Counseling programs supplement activities that promote self-control, improve socialization skills and enhance academic performance. Kinship Support Services Program - Nearly 18,000 children in Alameda County are being raised by family members other than their birth parents. Lincoln provides 300 kinship families in Southern Alameda County with advocacy, training, case management and respite services.
History:
Begun in March, 1883, by Rebecca McWade to care for Oakland's orphaned and abandoned children Lincoln was first incorporated in 1887 as the West Oakland Home for Foundlings and Destitute Children. It was the area's first integrated, non-sectarian orphanage. The orphanage moved to the Lincoln Avenue campus in the Oakland hills in 1929. The organization changed its focus in 1951 and became a residential treatment program for severely emotionally disturbed children.
