Livermore READ Project
There are adults in our community who struggle to read at home...at work...to their children. Become a volunteer literacy tutor, and make a real difference in someone's life.
Description:
Isn't it wonderful to be able to read? Many adults lack that particular privilege. They struggle with the basic reading and writing skills necessary to function in today's society. Written words like "flammable," or "final notice," or "right turn only" have no meaning. The Livermore READ Project is the adult literacy program of the Livermore Public Library. Volunteer tutors provide free, confidential, one-on-one basic literacy and ESL instruction for adults who are over 16 years of age, out of the K-12 school system, and reading below an 8th grade level. We're helping adults learn how to complete job applications, read to their children, have a voice in their community, and become citizens. Weekly tutoring sessions of 1-2 hours are scheduled at the tutor and student's convenience, and tutors are provided with a free training and all necessary materials. Volunteers must be over the age of 16, willing to commit to the READ Project for 6 months, and able to attend a free tutor training workshop. Trainings are held 4 times a year. Call 925-373-5507 for dates.
History:
The Read Project was begun in 1986 at the Livermore Public Library. Since its inception, the READ Project has met the basic literacy, English as a Second Language and GED learning needs of its students by offering free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring 7 days per week. The program has trained over 1500 tutors and enrolled over 3200 learners. The READ Project receives funding from the California State Library.
