We are a loosely-organized group of volunteers who have been serving free meals in the People's Park neighborhood of Berkeley for 20 years.

Description:
The name reflects our origin in the Catholic Worker movement. We do not have a house or even an office, and we have no formal connection with any church or denomination. We have three part-time employees who restock the kitchen and fill in when volunteers are short. Volunteers do 60% of the work.

History:
Dorothy Day House volunteers served meals on Telegraph Avenue during the struggle to keep People's Park a park, later moving a trailer into the park -- the People's Cafe -- where they served meals in defiance of the city and the university. Now we depend on funding from the city to pay for food, kitchen, and the church dining room we rent near the campus.

Dorothy Day House 5 Overall Experience    Experience rating
humbeling
Dorothy Day House is one of the hardest working volenteer groups I've ever met. It isn't the physical labor of just making breakfast for the many, many homeless in Berkeley, its the fullfillment of helping your community heal on meal at a time. The first time a homeless person comes up to you and says, " You won't be seeing me anymore, because I'm no longer homeless. Thank you for all you've done" I dare anyone not to feel so overwhelmed with emotions, and it bring you back week after week. I truely learned what dignity is all about. I want to say thanks to all the great folks at Dorothy Day House for the past two years I have volenteered with them. It was indeed a true life growing experience.
