Emergency Shelter Program
Logo

Our mission is to provide shelter, support, and education for women and children who are victims of domestic violence or homelessness, and to provide safe, challenging, and nurturing childcare for children in the community.

Description:
Emergency Shelter Program (ESP) maintains two major services to the East Bay area: (1) Providing an emergency shelter for women and children who are the victims of domestic violence and/or homelessness and (2) Providing low income families with subsidized childcare.

At the shelter, ESP assists women in developing the skills and resources, both personal and economic, for self-sufficency. ESP will provide shelter and support services to women and their children who are homeless for ANY of the following reasons:

  1. ) Domestic Violence
  2. ) Financial Hardship
  3. ) Eviction
  4. ) Family Problems
  5. ) Loss of Employment
ESP provides shelter and support services (such an transitional housing and employment referrals) to approximately 250-300 women and children, and serves 30,000 meals per year.

At our preschool, ESP provides quality childcare for children ages two to five years of age with age-appropriate curriculum, based on the child's individual development and specific needs.

History:
ESP was established in 1972 as a temporary residence for girls and women over 13 years of age whom were victims of economic homelessness and family violence. The original eight-bed shelter was located in downtown Hayward. In November 1975 ESP's shelter moved to a new location and expanded to 16-beds. In 1980 ESP purchased a 19-room facility in South Hayward with a client capacity of twenty-four. Major renovations took place in 1984 that allowed ESP to expand to 40 beds. In 1985 ESP commenced operations of its licensed childcare center, A Special Place.
